Route

The Sugar Loaf is one of the tallest peaks in the Black Mountains and a real gem within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. It's one of those walks that offers serious reward for relatively little effort, and on a clear day, the views from the summit are something else. You can spot Pen y Fan in the distance and even catch a glimpse of the Bristol Channel.

There are several route options to choose from, which makes it a favourite for everything from early morning sunrise climbs to relaxed family walks. Most of the grassy paths wind together quite naturally and are fairly easy to follow, though a map or app always helps.

The climb is steady for the most part, with the final push to the summit getting steeper and rockier underfoot. It's nothing too technical, but you’ll want proper boots for grip. At the top, you’ll find a trig point and plenty of space to stop for a snack and soak up the scenery.

If you’re after a shorter outing, you can always retrace your steps and head back the way you came. Or, if you're up for adding a few extra miles, there are extended routes that follow the full ridge line or even begin down in Abergavenny town for a longer day out.

However you choose to do it, Sugar Loaf is a classic for a reason. Rugged, beautiful, and just wild enough to feel like a proper adventure.

There are two large free car parks at the start of the walk, but they can get busy, especially on weekends. The lane leading up is narrow with limited passing places, so take it slow... and be prepared to reverse!

Nesting season is between March 1st to July 31st each year and on open access land, dogs are required to be on lead by law.
