Route

If you fancy a short walk with lovely views, Pen y Crug is a great little option just outside Brecon. It’s an old Iron Age hillfort that sits above the Usk Valley, and from the top you get some really gorgeous views across the Brecon Beacons.

The route is circular, easy going and ideal if you’re after a more relaxed walk. It’s perfect for families or even a sunset stroll. It’s also great for dogs. Riley loved it here, snuffling through the open grass and bouncing along the paths (with plenty of snack stops, obviously).

You start from a quiet layby just above Brecon, and the trail gently winds its way through fields and open hillside before reaching the summit. From the top, you’re treated to wide views of Pen y Fan, the Black Mountains and Brecon itself. You can still see the old hillfort ramparts too, which gives it a bit of extra character.

Whilst this is a short walk, there’s no defined path across the open grazing land. The elevation is short and sweet but enough to get your heart rate going. There’s nothing technical about this route, but you’ll definitely feel like you’ve earned the view.
