Route
Llyn Crafnant is a stunning 63-acre natural mountain lake nestled in a valley where the northern edge of the Gwydir Forest meets the lower slopes of the Carneddau mountains, more specifically the ridge of Cefn Cyfarwydd. Just above the village of Trefriw, this peaceful spot has long been known for its beauty and has been stocked with rainbow and brown trout.
The scenic circular walk around Llyn Crafnant is a gentle and accessible route, following a mix of wide tracks, tarmac lanes, and forest roads, with a few slightly rougher sections close to the water’s edge. You’ll pass through three kissing gates and two standard gates, with two well-placed benches offering perfect rest stops to take in the views of the surrounding mountains and sparkling lake.
Although signs at one end of the lake state that swimming is not allowed, this dates back to its time as a working reservoir — which is no longer the case. About half a mile along the shoreline, a bench marks a popular wild swimming spot, with a pretty shingle beach and a gradual entry into the water that makes it perfect for a refreshing dip.
