Route
Standing at 918m, Tryfan is one of the most iconic peaks in Eryri (Snowdonia) — its jagged outline and rocky summit make it instantly recognisable.
There are several starting points, with the AllTrails route beginning from a paid car park, however, we opted for the free lay-by a little further up the road. Whichever option you choose, aim to arrive before 8.30am or later in the afternoon, as this is a very popular spot with multiple routes setting off from the same area.
This route via the South Ridge is the most popular ascent and offers a challenging but unforgettable mountain day.
The route begins on a clear, well-defined path that steadily climbs towards the South Ridge.
For much of the ascent, the walking is straightforward, though steep in places. As you approach the upper ridge, the character of the climb changes — the final push to the summit is a hands-on scramble over large boulders, with no single obvious line. Picking your route carefully and taking your time is key here.
The scramble makes this walk unsuitable for inexperienced hikers, but for those who enjoy a challenge it’s incredibly rewarding. The summit is marked by the famous monoliths, Adam and Eve, and offers spectacular views over the Glyderau and across to the Carneddau.
This is a short but tough route that demands a good head for heights and plenty of energy. In return, you’ll get one of the most exhilarating climbs and views in all of Eryri.
