Route
A beautiful secluded route in the Rhinogydd range. The trail starts at a at small campsite at the banks of Llyn Cwm Bychan. There is a clear, signposted path leading from the carpark through a beautiful wooded area before transitioning into the Roman Steps.
You follow the Roman Steps to Llyn Du before the route becomes less obvious to the summit of Rhinog Fawr. We had to check our route a number of times to ensure we were heading in the right direction, if you're planning on using a mobile phone app, ensure you have full battery and a spare power bank to hand. The final section of the route is difficult, with jagged rocks and scree but the view from the top is spectacular and worth the tough ascent.
The summit is marked with a trig but close by is a storm shelter, which acted as a lovely wind break to enjoy some lunch.
You take a slightly different path back down from the summit, which loops around the lake from the opposite side, before re-joining the and retracing your route back down the Roman Steps towards the start point.
