Route

Moel Hebog (meaning Hill of the Hawk) rises sharply above the village of Beddgelert and offers a rewarding hike with far-reaching views across Snowdonia.

Starting from the pay-and-display car park, the trail wastes no time - it’s a steady, steep incline right from the off. The path is fairly obvious the whole way to the summit, with no technical scrambling required, but you’ll need a decent level of fitness to tackle the gradient. Near the summit, the terrain becomes looser underfoot with some scree, but there are no exposed ridge lines to contend with.

Water is scarce on the ascent, so make sure to carry enough for you and your dog. On a clear day, the summit rewards your efforts with sweeping views of Snowdonia’s peaks and valleys.

For the descent, follow the path down the far side of Moel Hebog towards Moel Lefn. Before beginning the climb to the next summit, turn right and follow the wall down to the forest line. From here, way markers guide you through the woodland, where the path can be boggy in places as it traces a small stream. Dogs can access the water at a few points here — perfect for a cooling drink or dip.

This circular route offers a fantastic balance of challenge and scenery, making it a great choice for those looking to experience one of Snowdonia’s quieter yet striking summits.
