Route

This is a long, challenging day out in the Carneddau mountains, taking in multiple summits including four of the Welsh 3000s: Yr Elen (962m), Carnedd Llewelyn (1,064m), Foel Grach (975m), and Carnedd Gwenllian (925m).

We highly recommend tackling the route anticlockwise, ascending Yr Elen first — this gets the bulk of the climbing out of the way early and makes the long ridge traverse far more enjoyable.

The initial section crosses farmland, where the right of way isn’t clearly marked. Stiles are in poor condition, with some steps removed, and signage is minimal. Without dogs this isn’t much of an issue, but with dogs it can be trickier. You can, however, follow the fence line to a gate and re-join the path without too much of a detour.

The first 2.5 miles is a steady climb to Yr Elen. The path is well-defined and never technical, but the sustained gradient demands a high level of fitness. Once on the ridge, the rewards are immediate: sweeping views across the Carneddau, Snowdon, and out to Anglesey on a clear day.

The traverse between summits is a joy, with rocky outcrops, broad ridge lines, and that wild, remote feel that makes the Carneddau so special. Going anticlockwise means that after ticking off Yr Elen and Carnedd Llewelyn, you descend gradually while collecting a further five peaks, with the option of a short detour to include Bera Mawr as well.

While the terrain is mostly straightforward, the sheer distance and elevation gain make this a serious mountain day. Come well-prepared with food, water, and layers.

This is one for strong legs and big mountain lovers — a tough but incredibly rewarding circuit that showcases the very best of the Carneddau."
