Route

This peaceful circular walk is a great way to explore the quieter, wilder western edges of Bannau Brycheiniog, taking in both Garreg Lwyd and Garreg Las along the way.

The route starts with a steady climb over grassy moorland, where defined paths are few and far between.  Make sure your phone’s fully charged or you’ve packed a trusty map.

You’ll reach Garreg Lwyd early on, before continuing towards the broad, rugged summit of Garreg Las.  At the top, you’ll find two enormous Bronze Age burial cairns known as Carnau’r Garreg Las, each stretching nearly 20 metres in diameter. They’re a striking feature of the landscape and hint at the area’s ancient past.

The return leg loops across open hillside and through old limestone quarries, with long sections of boggy terrain underfoot. Despite the occasional squelch, this a brilliant escape from the busier peaks.

Information for pet owners

Tryfan is technically dog-friendly, but the final section is very demanding. We would recommend building up with other Welsh 3000s before attempting this, as you may need to help your dog over certain boulders. Confident, experienced mountain dogs will cope better, but smaller dogs may struggle.

There are no stiles on this route and several natural water sources along the way

Likely to encounter grazing livestock such as sheep at various times of the year
