Route

This iconic circular route is easily one of the most rewarding days out in Bannau Brycheiniog. The Pen y Fan Horseshoeoffers a real mountain adventure with big skies, big views, and that satisfying leg burn that comes with a proper day in the hills.

The route is a dramatic loop that takes in four of the most striking peaks in the central Beacons range; Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Cribyn, and Fan y Big. On a clear day, you’ll be treated to panoramic views stretching across the National Park and if you’re lucky, even out as far as the Bristol Channel or the Black Mountains to the east.

While most visitors tend to opt for the shorter, more direct up-and-back route from Pont ar Daf, the horseshoe gives you so much more, proper soul food for outdoor lovers.

Although the trails are well-worn and easy to follow, it’s not a walk to underestimate. The section between Cribyn and Pen y Fan is particularly steep, with a bit of a calf-burner ascent and loose ground in places.

There are some fairly sheer drops along the ridge paths, so keep dogs on a lead if they’re prone to zoomies near edges.
Your dog should be confident on rocky, uneven ground, and ready for a decent workout. The elevation gain is noticeable and sustained, but you’re rewarded at every stage with incredible views and plenty of spots for a water break or photo stop.
