Route

Cnicht, otherwise known as the Welsh Matterhorn, is a challenging route including some scrambling to reach the summit.

Early in the ascent you pass the remnants of a prehistoric settlement before the path steepens towards the Cnicht ridge. There is a loose path which can be difficuly to follow at times, so ensure you have amble phone battery if you’re using an app. The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking with Yr Wydda (Snowdon) to the north and Cadair Idris to the south. You walk along the ridge, passing Cnicht North Top before making your descent back down towards the car.

I would highly recommend doing this route in summer as a large part of this walk is through soft terrain. We did this route towards the end of May after a particularly hot month and little rainfall, yet in certain areas the ground was still very soft and bouncy.

Due to the steepness of the scree section, I would advise walking anticlockwise as otherwise this could be dangerous trying to come down the scree.

We knew the weather was going to be hot and April told us that there was plenty of access to rivers, waters and lakes en route. The walk offered beautiful scenes and views of Eryri for miles and miles! It even had a little bit of a challenge on the final climb but we spoke to April who gave us her views about how “dog friendly” it was. Thank you The Great Outpaws 🙏🏻
