Riley's Essentials

Harness, Collar & Leads

Riley’s quite narrow, so we found that a lot of harnesses would rub under her armpits. We’re big fans of Dog Copenhagen and Twiggy Tags -  both brands offer great designs that suit slimmer builds really well.

We always pair her harness with a collar, though that’s just personal preference. I know plenty of people who use one or the other on their own.

Coats

A few good coats are an absolute essential -  especially for mountain hikes.

We’ve tried several of the big-name brands, but one recurring issue was that Riley really isn’t a fan of rear leg straps. After a few weeks of trying (and failing) to get her used to them, we stumbled across Hurtta - and haven’t looked back since.

We now use two Hurtta coats: the Monsoon Eco II, a lightweight raincoat that packs down small and is great to keep in your hiking bag year-round. Although it does have rear leg straps, its clever wraparound design means it stays in place far better than most — no more soggy back legs!

Our second go-to is the Extreme Eco Warmer II,  a complete game changer in winter. With thermal protection down to -30°C (yes, a bit much for the UK!), but it’s brilliant for cold-weather hikes. I especially love the longer hem that offers extra coverage where it matters most.
