Shacks 'Castor'

North Wales

If you're looking for a peaceful escape in North Wales, Castor at Shacks is a brilliant place to switch off for a few days. Tucked away in the countryside just south of Abergele, this cosy off grid cabin offers the perfect excuse to slow down, put the phone away, and enjoy the simple things.

Unlike some stays where you park right outside the door, getting to Castor is all part of the experience. After parking up, there's a short walk through a couple of fields to reach the cabin. If the weather has been wet, we'd definitely recommend packing your wellies, as parts can get muddy. A wheelbarrow is provided to help transport your bags, although we'd still suggest packing light where possible.

Inside, the cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The open plan layout feels surprisingly spacious, with a comfortable bed, well equipped kitchenette, and large windows that make the most of the countryside views. It's the sort of place where you can happily spend an afternoon reading a book, watching the weather roll in, or simply doing absolutely nothing.

Outside is where Castor really comes into its own. The private outdoor space includes an outdoor bath, fire pit, and seating area, making it easy to spend most of your stay outdoors. Whether you're enjoying a morning coffee, soaking under the stars, or cooking dinner as the sun sets, there's something wonderfully relaxing about being surrounded by nothing but fields and fresh air.

One of our favourite things about Castor is that it sits within its own secure area. For dog owners, this is a huge bonus. The neighbouring fields often contain sheep, but the cabin itself is enclosed, allowing most dogs to safely enjoy the outdoor space without needing to be on lead the whole time.

Castor feels wonderfully remote, yet you're still within easy reach of the beaches, walking routes, and attractions that make this corner of North Wales so popular. It's the perfect base for exploring during the day before returning to your own little hideaway for the evening.

Whether you're planning a romantic break, a dog friendly getaway, or simply a few days away from the hustle and bustle, Castor is one of those places that makes it very easy to slow down and relax.

Information for pet owners

Dogs are very welcome at Castor. One of the biggest benefits of this cabin is its private enclosed outdoor space, allowing most dogs to relax and enjoy the outdoors safely.

The neighbouring fields often contain sheep, so owners of particularly adventurous or fence-jumping dogs should take this into consideration. For most dogs, however, the enclosed setting provides a secure and stress-free environment to enjoy alongside their owners

Nearby walks

One of the best things about staying at Castor is its location. Sitting on the doorstep of North Wales, you're perfectly placed to explore some of the country's best beaches, mountains, forests, and walking routes.

If you're looking for a mountain adventure, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is around an hour away and offers a range of routes to suit different abilities.

For something a little more relaxed, the North Wales coastline is home to miles of dog friendly beaches and coastal paths, while nearby countryside walks provide plenty of opportunities to stretch your legs without travelling too far from the cabin.

Whether you're chasing a mountain summit, a woodland wander, or a stroll along the beach, Castor makes an excellent base for exploring everything North Wales has to offer.

Nearby attractions

Animal lovers may enjoy a visit to Welsh Mountain Zoo in nearby Colwyn Bay, while history enthusiasts can explore the impressive castles at Conwy and Caernarfon, both recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
