If you’re looking for a peaceful countryside escape near Edinburgh that both you and your dog will love, look no further than Pentland Shepherd Huts. Tucked away in the rolling hills outside Penicuik, these charming huts combine rustic comfort with modern touches, making them the perfect base for exploring the stunning Pentland Hills Regional Park.

Situated on a working livery yard and surrounded by open countryside, Pentland Shepherd Huts offer a cosy, private retreat with incredible views and plenty of space to roam. While the huts aren’t fenced, it’s a peaceful and safe environment.

There are five shepherd huts in total, each individually styled with simple, elegant décor and thoughtful details. Every hut features a comfortable bed, kitchenette, en-suite bathroom, and a private outdoor area with lounge chairs, picnic bench, BBQ, and fire pit. The Connemara and Shetland huts even come with the added luxury of a wood-fired hot tub, perfect for unwinding after a day on the hills. Huts are available for two or four guests, with sofa beds provided in the larger huts for extra space and flexibility.

Guests can also meet the friendly pygmy goats and miniature Shetland ponies on site, adding a lovely, personal touch to the stay.

Despite the peaceful setting, you’re just 13 miles from Edinburgh city centre, easily accessible by car or public transport, the perfect balance of countryside tranquillity and city adventure.

If your idea of heaven is waking up to birdsong, hiking rugged Scottish hills, and ending the day beside a fire with your dog by your side, Pentland Shepherd Huts should be at the top of your list. Whether you’re tackling Scald Law or exploring quieter paths near Nine Mile Burn, this beautiful corner of the Pentlands promises calm, connection, and unforgettable views.

Nearby walks

You’ll find the Pentland Hills right on your doorstep. Two must-do routes for visitors staying at the huts are Nine Mile Burn and Scald Law, both offering breathtaking views and plenty of space to explore.

Hike 1: Nine Mile Burn & the Southern Pentlands

Located just a short drive from the huts, the small hamlet of Nine Mile Burn sits at the foot of the southern Pentlands. This is a great starting point for a variety of walking routes ranging from easy circuits to more challenging ridge trails.

Recommended routes:

Circular via Monks Rig & Braid Law – A moderate 4-mile loop through open moorland, perfect for morning walks.

Pentland Five Peaks Trail – For the adventurous, a longer 8-10 mile ridge route taking in The Kips, Scald Law, and West Kip.

Vast open terrain and soft grassy paths for roaming although there is a sheep to be aware of.

Streams and burns along the route for water breaks.

Hike 2: Scald Law – The Highest Point in the Pentlands

At 579 metres, Scald Law is the highest peak in the Pentlands and offers a panoramic view of Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and even the Highlands on a clear day.

Route highlight: Start from Flotterstone Visitor Centre, following the ridge path past Turnhouse Hill and Carnethy Hill before reaching the summit.

The full loop is about 12 km (4–5 hours).

Consider descending via Loganlea or Glencorse Reservoir for a scenic, gentler finish.
